Bass Ukes have been with us for some time now, but the difference with this one is that it uses custom steel strings and a magnetic pickup rather than the Poly strings and Piezo more commonly found on other bass Ukes. This gives a more traditional electric bass sound and opens up techniques which would not sound so good on Poly strings and Piezo pickup. And it does that while still delivering lots of low end bass.
It also differs from other bass Ukes in its extravagance! This one has a 5 piece Maple and Honduran Mahogany neck through design, with Burr Maple top, Honduran Mahogany back and Maple accent in the middle.
All the hardware is by Gotoh and the pickup is a Delano Xtender, chosen for it’s great tone and also for it’s funky shape to go with the rest of the instrument.
The whole instrument is finished off in a dazzling high gloss, with the book matched Maple top and headstock face in Red, which adds some nice contrast and ties in with the Mahogany laminates and back.

This bass (along with all other mini basses I’ve made) is tuned to bass octave, rather an octave higher like other mini basses often are. Which means despite its tiny size, it has the voice of a proper bass and no octave pedal is needed for bassy goodness.
The concept with these mini basses is basically a boutique custom bass in miniature. No corners cut, same high quality hardware, same level of attention to detail as the larger instruments get.
This one is constructed mainly from flamed maple. The neck is a three piece laminate of flamed American hard Maple and the wings UK native flamed Maple.
The fretboard is Ebony with a rather attractive streak of colour running down it, which adds a nice flash of colour into a monochrome choice of woods. It features 20 stainless steel frets and mother of pearl inlays.
The pickup is a custom made Delano Xtender…I got them to make me a quad coil of one of my favourite pickups! The switching is series, cross coil (p bass) and reverse cross coil (reverse P) adding quite a bit of tonal variation.
